Mountainside House

The Clients had very specific requests due to their family’s allergies and environmental sensitivities in the design of their 13,000 square foot house.  The house is energy efficient, utilizing geo-thermal and solar technologies as well as zoning.

Mechanical systems and material selections were based on their “Green” attributes and their contributions to superior indoor air quality. Clawson worked with Civil Engineers to disturb as little soil as possible and a Landscape Designer and Forester to maintain as many of the existing trees and the natural setting.

Clawson Architects was able to secure three variances for this project to allow for installation of Solar Panels and a Driveway that respected the natural setting.

This house was built in nine months using traditional labor and methods.  The foundation was set in November of 2009, framed and enclosed in Jan 2010 and the owners had moved into the house in August of 2010.

Green features of this project include:

  • Solar Technologies including house orientation
  • Geo-thermal Technology
  • The House is on a Previously Developed Site with in an existing neighborhood.
  • Used the natural slope of the site to minimize the removal of soil
  • Maintained the natural Park like setting.
  • Attention to indoor air quality
    • Zero VOC’s in paint and building materials selected
    • Air Filtration System
    • Humidification System
  • Energy Efficient Windows and Doors
  • Closed cell insulation
  • Zoned Radiant Heat
  • Rain Gardens and Rain Barrels

Variances were necessary because of the odd shaped lot.

  • Height to accommodate the Solar Panels on the Roof
  • Odd shaped flag lot required variance interpretation.
  • Side yard set back for driveway
