HillsideA stately home perched on the hillside was hiding a rear yard with an unrealized potential. The lower rear yard had been sacrificed for automobile circulation and upper yard was difficult to access. The client requested a new kitchen, family room and two-car garage. As architects, we saw this as a wonderful opportunity to engage the landscape and make a soft transition to the hillside. The stone base of the structure is integrated with the site retaining walls. The kitchen is transparent allowing for unobstructed views of the outdoor living spaces, which includes a patio with outdoor grilling kitchen and fireplace. The existing second floor balcony now flows out onto a green roof that engages the hillside. This idea reinforces the concept of the house and its relationship with the landscape. Ultimately, while requesting a modern addition at the start, the client determined that they would be more comfortable with a more traditional look. Using the same principles, we were able to deliver an addition that engaged the landscape and created an outdoor living space.
