"The kitchen has now become the heart of this vibrant home," said Nancy Brannigan Painter of New Jersey Monthly, October 2005 issue, of this circa-1920s Arts & Crafts home that was transformed from a domestic work space into a functional hub for this home and its family.

The program was to:

  1. Create a kitchen that would be built to the way the client lives
  2. Stay within the kitchen's original footprint
  3. Bring the Arts & Crafts style details that exist throughout the house into the kitchen
  4. Use recycled or eco-friendly materials wherever possible

By removing a wall between the kitchen and dinette and relocating the powder room, the house now flows from one room to the other not only in plan, but visually through the use of consistent period details.

The mullion design of the windows in the stair hall and dining room were replicated for the new kitchen windows. Careful attention was given to sight lines "creating unobstructed views between rooms and constant outdoor views from any point in the kitchen," as noted in the NJ Monthly piece.

The end result: a beautiful kitchen that honors the period of the original house and the lifestyle of today's family and the environment.
