Our Process:

1. Understanding the Historic Context

Every project begins with research. We study the home’s architectural history, its significance within the neighborhood or historic district, and the preservation guidelines that apply. Our team reviews National Register listings, local Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) requirements, and zoning codes. When needed, we collaborate with preservation consultants and local historians to ensure our approach is both informed and sensitive.

2. Documentation and Existing Conditions Analysis

We believe that successful renovations start with a clear understanding of what exists. Our team carefully surveys and documents the home, creating measured drawings and photographic records. This process helps us identify original materials, key features, and changes made over time—guiding our decisions about what to preserve, restore, or thoughtfully adapt.

At Clawson Architects we have a wealth of knowledge and acute understanding of the the design elements of period homes such that we are not afraid to recommend additions and alterations that are in the spirit of the original design intent that integrate so well that many often comment that it is challenging to know what was original and what is new.

3. Design Development: Balancing Preservation with Modern Living

Our design philosophy is rooted in respect for the past and a vision for the future. We work closely with homeowners to develop solutions that honor the home’s character while meeting today’s needs. Whether expanding a kitchen, creating a new primary suite, or improving energy efficiency, we ensure every addition or modification is seamlessly integrated—both in detail and proportion.

With team members trained in classical architecture and historic preservation, we bring both authenticity and accuracy to every project.

4. Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) Review and Approvals

Navigating the approval process can be complex, especially in communities with active HPCs. Our experience in towns like Westfield, Ridgewood, and Summit, as well as historic homes in NY, means we know how to prepare thorough submissions that reflect our commitment to preservation. Our reputation for thoughtful, high-quality work often reassures review boards and neighbors alike.

5. Construction Documents and Collaboration with Craftspeople

Once approvals are in place, we prepare detailed construction documents that honor both the spirit and letter of preservation requirements. We partner with skilled contractors and craftspeople—many of whom specialize in traditional methods and materials—to ensure the finished project reflects the integrity of our design.
